Primo PDF kommt als kostenlose Konkurrenz zu Adobes Referenz Acrobat auf den heimischen Rechner. Der virtuelle Drucker kommt in Sachen Funktionen nicht ganz an den Platzhirschen heran, sollte für die meisten Anwender aber vollkommen ausreichen.

Wie die meisten Vertreter seines Genres agiert auch Primo PDF primär als zusätzlicher Druckertreiber. Durch diese Arbeitsweise erstellt man Adobe Reader Dokumente aus jedem Programm mit Druckfunktion heraus.

Als praktisch erweisen sich zudem speicherbare Voreinstellungen für verschiedene Einsatzzwecke. So müssen Anwender optmierte Parameter nicht für jeden Arbeitsgang mit Primo PDF neu eingeben.

PDFCreator ist ein kostenloses Programm, mit dem sich Dokumente eines jeden Windows-Programms als PDF-Datei speichern lassen. Es wird dazu als Drucker in das System eingebunden und erlaubt so die Ausgabe in eine PDF-Datei.

Die Qualität der erstellten Dokumente ist dabei ähnlich hoch wie bei den Produkten von Adobe. Zum weiteren Funktionsumfang von PDFCreator gehört eine 128-Bit-Verschlüsselung, die die Dateien vor unerwünschten Zugriffen schützt. Auch eine Bündelung mehrerer Dokumente zu einer PDF-Datei ist möglich.

Soweit so gut. Was den "PDF-XChange Viewer" aber von ähnlichen Programmen abhebt, ist die Möglichkeit, Kommentare, Notizen und Markierungen am Text direkt am PC vorzunehmen. Anderswo kostet solch eine Funktion richtig Geld. Mit der Screenshot-Funktion können Teile eines Dokuments in andere Anwendungen kopiert werden, die Export-Funktion erlaubt es, das PDF als ganzes in ein beliebiges Grafikformat zu konvertieren.
