Transmission is a cross-platform BitTorrent client that is:

Free and Community-Driven.
Transmission differs from bigger clients like μTorrent, Vuze, and BitComet in that it is volunteer-based, open source, and noncommercial. There is no payware version as with Vuze Plus. We don't bundle toolbars, adware, DNA, or anything else. If we did, someone else would fork the project and strip it back out. So what you see is what you get -- and if you'd like to check under the hood to see for yourself, the source code is available for anyone to read.

If you're a programmer, translator, tester, web designer, graphic artist, or a regular person who wants to help, we happily welcome volunteers.

Easy.
Transmission is designed to for easy, powerful use. We've set the defaults to "Just Work" and it only takes a few clicks to configure advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocklists, and the web interface. When Ubuntu chose Transmission as its default BitTorrent client, one of the most-cited reasons was its easy learning curve.

Der BitTorrent-Cient µTorrent soll künftig mehr Geld einbringen, weshalb die Entwickler die kostenlose Version bald mit Werbung versehen wollen. Auf diese Weise soll die Popularität der Software genutzt werden, um die Entwicklung zu finanzieren.

Wie die Entwickler von µTorrent in einem Forum-Eintrag zur nächsten Version ihrer Software erklärten, will man künftig an der Spitze der Torrent-Liste des Programms sogenannte "Featured Torrents" anzeigen. Dort sollen verschiedene Arten von Inhalten erscheinen, darunter Filme, Spiele, Musik, Software und mehr.

Das Ziel sei es, Inhalte zu bewerben, die für die Anwender von Interesse sind und gleichzeitig Filmemachern, Musikern, Spieleentwicklern und anderen eine Möglichkeit zur Verbreitung ihrer Inhalte zu geben. Man wolle der Welt zeigen, dass "Torrenting auch für Gutes verwendet werden kann", so das µTorrent-Team.

Konkret bedeutet dies, dass die Nutzer von µTorrent drei verschiedene Arten von Angeboten in einem schmalen Rechteck direkt unterhalb der Werkzeugleiste der Benutzeroberfläche angezeigt bekommen. Diese Angebote sollen für den jeweiligen Nutzer "gezielt" ausgewählt und für ihn interessant sein.

Einerseits werden die von der Mutterfirma von µTorrent, der BitTorrent, Inc., selbst stammende Produkte, Funktionen und Dienste beworben, eine zweite Art von Angebote werden von Partnern stammen, die Spiele, Sicherheitslösungen, Dienste zum Schutz der Privatsphäre und andere Produkte anbieten. Die Dritte Art von Angeboten soll unabhängige Musiker und Filmemacher bewerben.

Die Nutzer der kostenlosen Ausgabe von µTorrent können die Werbung nicht deaktivieren. Sie haben lediglich die Möglichkeit, durch Klicken auf ein (X) in der jeweiligen Werbung eine andere Anzeige einblenden zu lassen. Die Nutzer der für 24,95 US-Dollar erhältlichen Pro-Version von µTorrent bekommen keine Werbung angezeigt.

Die Entwickler wiesen ausdrücklich darauf hin, dass µTorrent künftig auch zum Abruf neuer Werbemittel mit einem ihrer Server kommunizieren wird. Dabei sollen keine Informationen übertragen werden, die einen bestimmten Anwender identifizieren könnten.

Wie BitTorrent, Inc. gegenüber 'TorrentFreak' mitteilte, will man lediglich die IP-Adresse der Nutzer auswerten, um regional angepasste Werbung auszuliefern. Darüber hinaus würden keine weiteren Daten zur Anpassung verwendet, hieß es.

Bei den Nutzern von µTorrent kommt die Nachricht über die Neuerung natürlich nicht gut an. BitTorrent, Inc. hatte µTorrent im Jahr 2006 gekauft, nachdem die im September 2005 erschienene erste Version schnell populär wurde, weil die Software sich durch ihre extrem kompakte und ressourcenschonende Form auszeichnete. Heute nutzen mehr als 125 Millionen Anwender weltweit µTorrent.

Nach unbestätigten Angaben einer firmennahen Quelle, die von TorrentFreak zitiert wird, hat BitTorrent, Inc. einen jährlichen Umsatz zwischen 15 und 20 Millionen US-Dollar.

FrostWire is an peer-to-peer file sharing program for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. FrostWire is written in Java, and is a fork of LimeWire, another popular Gnutella client. The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code, which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.
