RetroShare ist ein quelloffenes und betriebssystemunabhängiges Programm, welches eine private, sichere und dezentralisierte Kommunikation ermöglicht. Sowohl der Austausch von Dateien als auch der Chat finden verschlüsselt in einem abgeschlossenen Bereich des Internet statt. Alle Personen aus der eigenen Freundesliste werden mit Hilfe von Schlüsseln des RSA-Kryptosystems identifiziert. Im Gegensatz zum Darknet ist auch ein Austausch mit Freunden von Freunden möglich, weswegen vor allem Filesharer diesem Programm den Vorzug geben. Zwar ist ein Austausch mit Kontakten aus zweiter und dritter Ebene möglich, Abmahnungen hingegen können nur von den eigenen Freunden aus erster Ebene erfolgen. Von daher ist eine tiefgreifende Prüfung der eigenen Kontakte sehr wichtig.

Laut dem Changelog der Entwickler wurden in der neuen Beta Version unzählige Fehler entfernt und kleinere Verbesserungen eingebaut. Die neue Version ist seit kurzem für Windows, MAC OS X und verschiedene Linux-Distributionen erhältlich. Sie kann von der Webseite der Entwickler kostenlos heruntergeladen werden.
