Gestern wurde von RetroShare ein Update veröffentlicht, bei der vor Gebrauch kein Router mehr konfiguriert werden muss. Version 0.5.2 funktioniert auch ohne das Forwarden von Ports oder die Veränderung anderer Einstellungen am Router, was Laien den Einstieg deutlich erleichtert. Das Programm kann durch die Verschlüsselung aller Transfers die Filesharer vor möglichen Abmahnungen bewahren.

Gestern wurde vom vom Kommunikations- und Datenaustauschclient RetroShare ein größeres Update der Software veröffentlicht. Neben den weggefallenen Einstellungen bei der Benutzung von Routern hat man an einer Verbesserung der Stabilität der Transfers gearbeitet. Zudem hat das RetroShare Team einen  sogenannten „Getting Started Guide“ mit direktem E-Mail Support erstellt, der allen Hilfesuchenden Orientierung geben soll.

Das Programm ermöglicht für zahlreiche Betriebssysteme eine private, sichere, von einem Server unabhängige und somit dezentrale Kommunikation. Über den Client kann man verschlüsselt chatten oder Dateien austauschen. Neben dem Filesharing mit direkten und indirekten Kontakten können vor dem Abhören sichere Foren, Chats und andere Nachrichtenkanäle benutzt werden. Abmahnungen für die Verbreitung bzw. dem Download von urheberrechtlich geschützten Dateien können nur von direkten Freunden erfolgen, weswegen man sich die direkten Kontakte sehr genau prüfen sollte. Wer alle direkten Freunde persönlich kennt, ist vor einer Abmahnung sicher. Transfers mit indirekten Kontakten sind möglich und erweitern den Pool an angebotenen Dateien, allerdings kann darüber keine Abmahnung erfolgen. Es gibt keinen zentralen Dienst oder eine andere Stelle, bei der man sich registrieren oder seine Daten hinterlassen müsste. RetroShare benutzt für die Verschlüsselung eine spezielle Version des Industriestandards OpenSSL, der auch von Banken und anderen Unternehmen benutzt und als vertrauenswürdig eingestuft wird.

Wer das kostenlose Open Source Programm einmal ausprobieren möchte, kann die neue Version von hier herunterladen. Auch Version 0.5.2a steht wieder für MAC OS X, Windows und die Linux-Distributionen Ubuntu, Debian und Gentoo zur Verfügung.

FrostWire is an peer-to-peer file sharing program for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. FrostWire is written in Java, and is a fork of LimeWire, another popular Gnutella client. The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code, which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.

As with Limewire, FrostWire is written in Java, and so is capable of supporting multiple platforms. LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, while FrostWire is released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the free LimeWire version's functionality, plus a few features of LimeWire Pro's fee based upgrade. FrostWire also provides a chatroom which is absent in LimeWire. FrostWire's interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire's since it's based on the same code base, however, the color scheme is slightly different as is shown in the picture above. As in LimeWire, the FrostWire skin may also be changed to a variety of different colors.

TorrentControl allows modification of uploaded data amount announced to BitTorrent trackers according to rules. Rules are created automatically when download is started and can be created, modified or deleted manually.
