uTorrent ist der mit Abstand beliebteste Client für das Peer-to-Peer-Protokoll BitTorrent und gehört auch dem gleichnamigen Betreiber. In Sachen Finanzierung tut man sich aber nach wie vor schwer, denn das kostenlose Programm kam und kommt immer wieder in die Schlagzeilen, da man auch weniger gelungene Finanzierungsideen hatte.

Werbung und Software-Bündelung waren die bisher gängigen Methoden, mit denen BitTorrent Inc. den weit verbreiteten Client uTorrent (bzw. µTorrent) finanziert hat. Das ist bei Nutzern allerdings nicht besonders beliebt und rückt den Anbieter auch immer wieder in die Nähe von Risiko-Software. Gelegentlich schießt man sich auch ganz ordentlich selbst ins Bein, denn Anfang des Jahres versuchte man, an Geld über die (heimliche) Installation eines Bitcoin-Miners heranzukommen.

Bei Betreiber bzw. Besitzer BitTorrent Inc. will man umstrittene oder dubiose Finanzierungsmodelle hinter sich lassen und erwägt auf ein klassisches zu setzen, also eine durch und durch saubere Software gegen Bezahlung anzubieten, wie das Filesharing-Blog TorrentFreak berichtet.

Beim Anbieter erklärt man, dass man mit den bisherigen Einnahmequellen, die die Entwicklung finanzieren, ohnehin nicht besonders glücklich war. Gleichzeitig sei uTorrent aber eben eine kostenlose Software, das soll auch so bleiben.

"Optionen für alle Budgets"

Allerdings will man künftig Optionen für jedwedes Nutzer-Budget anbieten, schreiben die Macher im Forum von uTorrent. Man verspricht dabei in jeder Hinsicht "offen und transparent" agieren zu wollen. Details nannte man bisher keine, weshalb man nur spekulieren kann, ob man Abonnement-Lösungen oder Spenden ins Auge fasst. Ebenfalls ist nicht bekannt, ob man eine "Light"- und "Premium"-Version plant, also einen kostenlosen Client mit begrenztem Umfang und eine Bezahl-Anwendung mit voller Funktionalität.

CouchPotato is a handy application for the users that want certain movies and are too lazy to search the Internet. You only need to add the movie name and the parameters in the application and it will do all the searching for you. When a movie is found the files are downloaded to the selected folder. It can also rename the files, download the trailer and search for subtitle tracks.
