There is a new star in town! and it is located right there in your address field! You can now add and remove a page while visiting to your bookmarks. This is not a full bookmark manager (which we still have in the Bookmark menu and as a panel) but a quick and easy way to save a page for later. You can also add and remove a page from your Speed Dial page.

The star will light up star in the address field when you visit a page that is either bookmarked or is a Speed Dial.

In addition to a fancy new gadget to play with in the address field, we have also just finished a large Core upgrade. Fixes, improvements, and other known keywords apply. We also changed how we handled XML parsing failures by automatically reparsing as HTML instead of displaying an error.

Mac and Windows users can start using the -pd argument the same way as it works on Linux. Meaning you can specify an absolute path to a folder that should contain the Opera profile for that session.

We have upgraded the compiler we use on Mac, which resulted in a nice JavaScript performance increase for the platform.

Mondays are often depressing, so here is a new build with improvements to our Featherweight skin to help lighten your day.  Some of the highlights are:

    The icons have been polished and aligned
    Badge graphic has been tuned
    The panel now blends with the active tab
    Tuned colorization on Windows and Linux to blend more with the platform colors
    New URL drop down look, with easier to use search suggestions

Additionally, we have also done a fair amount of work on our auto-update and plugin installation features, and fixed a handful of annoying recent regressions.

Opera Software hat Opera Mini 6.5 und Opera Mobile 11.5 für Android vorgestellt. Die Browser sollen im Laufe des Tages im Android Market verfügbar sein. Beide kostenlosen Anwendungen sollen dem Benutzer jetzt einen besseren Überblick über das verbrauchte Datenvolumen geben – und über die mit Operas Proxy-basierter Kompression eingesparten Datenmengen.

Operas Mini und Mobile sollen sich zudem besser in das Smartphone-Betriebssystem einbetten; mit einem Shortcut für den Desktop soll der Benutzer schneller auf seine beliebtesten Bookmarks zugreifen können. Auch unter der Haube hat sich viel getan. So hat Opera Software nach eigenen Angaben die Rendering Engine Presto auf den aktuellen Stand gebracht, die Netzwerk-Performance verbessert und den Spreicherhunger der JavaScript-Engine verringert.

Opera veröffentlichte heute eine erste Alpha von Version 12 des gleichnamigen Browsers für Windows, Mac OS und Linux. Der Release war offensichtlich für Operas Konferenz Up North Web am Dienstag geplant, wurde aber erst mit kleiner Verspätung fertig.

Größte Baustelle war die Hardwarebeschleunigung der Grafikdarstellung, die es Opera als letzter der wichtigen Browser einführt. Mit dem direkten Zugriff auf die GPU sollen Animationen deutlich flüssiger laufen. Wie in Firefox, Chrome und Safari laufen nun auch in Opera 3D-Animationen über eine WebGL-Schnittstelle, die unter Windows DirectX unterstützt und unter Mac und Linux OpenGL. Die WebGL-Demos scheinen jedoch nicht unter allen Hardware-Umgebungen zu laufen.

Während WebGL und Hardwarebeschleunigung Flash vor allem bei Spielen und ähnlichen Einsatzgebieten Nutzer abjagen will, versucht sich Opera mit Version 12 auch an Videokonferenzen und Fotos. Der Zugriff auf die Webcam mit HTML und JavaScript soll nicht mehr, wie ursprünglich vorgesehen, über ein <device>-Element geschehen, sondern mit einem experimentellen API namens getUserMedia, das im Rahmen der WHATWG diskutiert wird. Missbrauch will Opera mit dem gleichen Mechanismus wie bei Geolocation-Ortung verhindern, also mit einem vom Browser initiierten Dialogfenster.

Chefentwickler Håkon Wium Lie, Miterfinder von CSS und nach wie vor aktiv an der Weiterentwicklung des Standards beteiligt, zeigte eine Stylesheet-Weiterentwicklung, die vor allem für Tablets interessant sein dürfte: Mit dem von Lie entworfenen CSS-"Paged Media Module" stellt der Browser Webseiten ohne Scrollbalken dar, sodass sich der Benutzer wie bei Tablet-Apps üblich horizontal blätternd durch den Inhalt bewegt.

Das Blättern funktioniert auch seitenübergreifend, wenn ein <link>-Element die Verbindung zwischen den Dokumenten festlegt. Elemte lassen sich an den Seitenrändern ausrichten. Mit Hilfe der gleichfalls neu unterstützten Spezifikation "DeviceOrientation" erkennt die Webseite auch, wenn das Display gedreht wurde. Opera 12 Alpha ist die erste Implementation von Paged Media; Opera hofft, dass die anderen Hersteller dieses CSS-Modul aufgreifen werden, und auch bei den Besuchern der Up North Web weckten die Demos großes Interesse.

Weniger sichtbar sind die Arbeiten an der JavaScript-Engine, die dank einiger Nachbesserungen erneut schneller geworden sein soll, am Netzwerk-Code und am HTML-Parser. Dieser ist nun wie bei der Konkurrenz endlich auf die mit HTML5 veränderte Syntax eingestellt, was zum Beispiel SVG-Code innerhalb von HTML erlaubt. Auch bei der vollständigen Unterstützung von ECMAScript 5.1, der Grundlage von JavaScript, zieht Opera nach. Bei CSS zählen radiale Gradienten zu den wichtigsten Neuerungen. Damit steigt der Score beim HTML5test von 286+7 in Opera 11.51 auf 336+9 von 450 Punkten. Ein Termin für die finale Version von Opera 12 ist noch nicht bekannt; zu rechnen dürfte mit ihm um Weihnachten herum sein.
