Nächste Runde im Kampf der Browser. Nächster im Ring: Opera. Der eigentlich gute, aber doch nicht so häufig genutzte Browser aus Norwegen fährt neue Geschütze auf. Opera bekommt mit Version 11 Erweiterungen. Richtig gelesen: Erweiterungen in Opera.

Ich behaupte: das wird dem Browser auf jedem Fall ein paar Prozente im Browsermarkt sichern. Noch kann nicht getestet werden, aber man will bald eine Alpha-Version von Opera 11 veröffentlichen. Da bin ich ja mal gespannt…

Opera hat eine erste Alphaversion seines Browsers Opera 11 veröffentlicht. Die größte Neuerung ist, dass Operas Browser nun Erweiterungen unterstützt. Außerdem veröffentlichte Opera den Browsersynchronisationsdienst Opera Link.

Mehr Möglichkeiten, um den Browser seinen eigenen Bedürfnissen anzupassen, das soll Opera 11 erlauben. Dazu unterstützt er nun Erweiterungen. Dabei setzt Opera auf Webstandards, Erweiterungen werden also in HTML, CSS und Javascript geschrieben. So soll es möglich sein, mit nur wenigen Optimierungen am Code bereits für andere Browser verfügbare Erweiterungen auf Opera zu portieren. Auch Chrome und Safari setzen auf Erweiterungen mit Webtechnik, Firefox ab der Version 4 ebenfalls.

Unter dev.opera.com stellt Opera Tutorials bereit, in denen gezeigt wird, wie sich Erweiterungen für den Browser entwickeln lassen. Fertige Erweiterungen können ab sofort unter addons.labs.opera.com hochgeladen und anderen Opera-Nutzern zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Allerdings will Opera alle Erweiterungen überprüfen, bevor sie veröffentlicht werden, um sicherzustellen, dass der Katalog an Erweiterungen frei von Defekten und bösartiger Software bleibt. Dennoch wird es möglich sein, Erweiterungen auch ohne den Weg über Operas Katalog zu verbreiten.

Darüber hinaus hat Opera seine Javascript-Engine weiter beschleunigt und führt eine Option Plugins wie Adobe Flash ein: So besteht nun die Möglichkeit, dass Flash-Inhalte erst angezeigt werden, wenn ein Nutzer dies per Klick freischaltet. Vor allem auf langsamen Rechnern soll das Surfen schneller machen. Die entsprechende Einstellung findet sich unter "Enable plug-ins only on demand" in den erweiterten Einstellungen.

In Sachen HTML5 gibt es von Opera Unterstützung für Websockets.

Zudem führt Opera 11 eine neue Bookmarkzeile ein, die die Personal-Bar ersetzen kann. Die neue Bookmark-Bar soll schnellen Zugriff auf die wichtigsten Lesezeichen geben.

Operas Mailcleint wurde zudem um ein neues Panel erweitert. Darüber kann festgelegt werden, in welcher Reihenfolge Accounts und Mails angezeigt werden. Die Elemente können hier einfach verschoben werden.

API für Opera Link veröffentlicht

Zusammen mit der Alpha von Opera 11 hat Opera auch ein offenes Entwickler-API für den Browsersynchronisationsdienst Opera Link veröffentlicht. Darüber können Entwickler Daten von Opera Link in andere Onlinedienste integrieren und Anwendungen mit für Java und Python zur Verfügung gestellten Bibliotheken erstellen.

Die Alpha von Opera 11 steht ab sofort unter opera.com/browser/next für Windows, Mac OS X und Linux zum Download bereit.

Der neue in Opera 11 Alpha eingeführte Installer bringt die Installationsroutine für externe Laufwerke mit.



Bei dieser Installationsmethode wird Opera auf einer externen Festplatte oder einem USB-Stick installiert. Also richtig portabel. Dabei werden keine Eingriffe am System vorgenommen. Ideal zum Testen von Opera. Eine Installationsmethode, die ich mir auch von Firefox oder Chrome wünschen würde. Weitere Infos über den neuen Installer wurden heute im Opera Blog genau beschrieben.

Eine erste Betaversion von Opera 11 steht als Download zur Verfügung. Als Neuerung bietet der Browser erstmals Tab Stacking. Mehrere geöffnete Browser-Tabs lassen sich analog zu einem Kartenstapel übereinanderlegen, um die Übersichtlichkeit in der Tableiste zu erhöhen.

Bislang werden Tabs in Opera nebeneinander angeordnet. Damit wird die Tableiste schnell unübersichtlich, wenn erst einmal mehr als 30 oder 40 Tabs geöffnet sind. Weil Opera von Haus aus Session Management zum Abspeichern der offenen Tabs unterstützt, ist das nicht so ungewöhnlich. Damit Anwender auch in diesem Fall besser den Überblick behalten, wurde die Funktion Tab Stacking entwickelt.

Beim Tab Stacking können beliebige Tabs übereinander gelegt werden, idealerweise passen sie thematisch zusammen. Dazu muss das Tab einfach mit der Maus über ein anderes Tab gezogen werden, schon ist ein Tab-Stapel eröffnet. Mit einem Mausklick werden alle Tabs in so einem Stapel geöffnet, ein weiterer Klick führt die Tabs wieder zu einem Stapel zusammen. Ruht der Mauspfeil auf einem Tabstapel, gibt es eine Vorschau mit allen Tabs in diesem Stapel. Auch das Herauslösen eines Tabs aus einem Stapel ist ohne Probleme möglich, indem es an eine andere Stelle in der Tableiste gezogen wird.

"Tabs gehören zu den wenigen Browserfunktionen, die fast alle nutzen - egal welchen Browser Sie bevorzugen", sagt Jan Standal, Vizepräsident von Opera Desktop Products. "Weil sich so viele von uns mit zehn oder sogar hundert offenen Tabs herumschlagen, brauchten wir einfach einen Weg, um das Tab Management zu vereinfachen. Genau wie das Stapeln von Papier für Recherchen, ist Tab Stacking ein intuitiver Weg, offene Tabs zu organisieren und zu sammeln."

Verbesserte Mausgesten

Bereits seit Opera 5 kann der Browser mit verschiedenen Mausgesten gesteuert werden. Bei Aktivierung der Mausgesten erscheint nun eine Befehlsübersicht mit den Mauspfaden auf dem Bildschirm, um den Umgang mit Mausgesten zu vereinfachen. Wer nur gelegentlich Mausgesten verwendet, soll diese leichter erlernen können.

In der Betaversion von Opera 11 lassen sich Erweiterungen integrieren, um den Funktionsumfang des Browsers zu erweitern. Nach Angaben von Opera wurden seit der Alphaversion von Opera 11 bereits mehr als 500.000 Erweiterungen heruntergeladen. Täglich würden bis zu 20 neue Erweiterungen bei Opera eingereicht, die dann auf Schadsoftware oder andere Probleme hin überprüft werden. Mit einem neuen Entwicklungsmodus sollen sich Erweiterungen noch einfacher erstellen lassen, indem diese darüber veröffentlicht, getestet und gepackt werden können.

Als weitere Neuerung aktualisiert Opera 11 Beta nun auch Unite-Anwendungen und Erweiterungen über Operas Update-Mechanismus, so dass diese Bereiche automatisch aktuell gehalten werden können. Für eine höhere Leistungsfähigkeit des Browsers lassen sich Plugins neuerdings erst laden, wenn diese auch benötigt werden. Damit soll ein Leistungsschub um bis zu 30 Prozent möglich sein.

Seit Opera 10.63 wurde die Javascript-Engine nochmals optimiert, besonders die Linuxversion von Opera profitiert davon und ist im direkten Vergleich bis zu 20 Prozent schneller. Aus der persönlichen Lesezeichenleiste ist eine allgemeine Lesezeichenleiste geworden, an den Funktionen hat sich nicht viel geändert. Der Nutzer kann weiterhin bestimmen, welche Lesezeichen in der Leiste erscheinen sollen. Ein paar Optimierungen gibt es im Adressfeld, das nun deutlicher den Sicherheitsstatus einer Seite anzeigt.

Die Macher von LastPass haben eine Erweiterung für Opera 11 veröffentlicht. Wir erinnern uns: Opera bekommt ein Erweiterungssystem. LastPass ist ein kostenloser Dienst, der Passwörter zwischen verschiedenen Browsern synchronisiert. Neben verschiedenen Erweiterungen für diverse Browser wie Firefox oder Chrome gibt es auch eine Android- und eine iOS-Version.



LastPass speichert, wie Xmarks auch, die Passwörter auf den eigenen Servern. Ihr gebt diese also aus der Hand. Firefox kann mittlerweile selber mittels der eingebauten Synchronisation vollständig mit einer anderen Installation abgeglichen werden wie auch Google Chrome.
