Opera hat heute die erste Beta von Version 10.50 seines Browsers veröffentlicht – vorerst allerdings nur für Windows, die Varianten für Mac und Linux lassen noch ein paar Tage auf sich warten. Die wichtigsten Änderungen betreffen das Innenleben der Software. Mit der neuen JavaScript-Engine "Carakan" will Opera seinen alten Werbeslogan "fastest browser on earth" wiederbeleben: Einen stichprobenartigen Test mit dem Sunspider-Benchmark absolvierte 10.50 Beta mehr als zwölfmal so schnell wie der aktuelle 10.10. Damit gibt er Safari und Chrome das Nachsehen, die etwa anderthalbmal so lange brauchen. Neu ist auch die Vektor-Grafikbibliothek Vega, die schnellere und weichere Bildübergänge ermöglichen soll.

Die Idee, Audio- und Videodateien ohne Plug-in direkt im Browser abzuspielen, stammt zwar ursprünglich von Opera, doch haben sie Firefox, Safari und Chrome schneller umgesetzt. Opera 10.50 holt dies nun endlich nach und kann mit Ogg Theora kodierte Videos abspielen; ähnlich wie Firefox unterstützt der Browser jedoch nicht das lizenzrechtlich problematische H.264. An neuen CSS3-Eigenschaften kennt Opera 10.50 unter anderem gerundete Rahmen, Schlagschatten bei Box-Elementen, mehrfache Hintergründe, Drehungen, Verzerrungen und einfache Animationen; die meisten dieser Funktionen sind auch in Gecko und/oder WebKit implementiert.

Als letzter größerer Browser führt nun auch Opera einen Privatsphäre-Modus ein, bei dem der Browser keine lokalen Daten über eine Surf-Sitzung aufzeichnet. Die Adresseingabezeile findet nun auch Seiten, auf denen der eingegebene Begriff vorkommt. Das Suchmaschinenfeld zeichnet eingegebene Suchen auf, sodass der Benutzer später problemlos zur Trefferseite zurückkehren kann. Die Suche innerhalb der Webseite kann nun auf ganze Wörter oder Links eingeschränkt werden und optional Groß-/Kleinschreibung unterscheiden.

Warnungen und andere Dialoge sind nun nicht mehr modal, sodass der Anwender zum Browserfenster wechseln und weitersurfen kann. Opera 10.50 integriert sich in Sachen Optik und Bedienung noch besser in Windows, etwa durch die Aero-Glass-Optik und durch das Opera-Menü, eine neu strukturierte Task-Leiste. Opera-Widgets sind nun unabhängiger vom Browser, da sie in einem eigenen Prozess in einem eigenen Fenster laufen.

We are focusing a lot on stability at the moment, and have fixed some of the most frequent crash bugs. Keep those crash logs coming, though!

Our core team has also tweaked class selector matching (CSS) performance a bit (a quick test showed performance gains of up to 20-30% for the specific testcase I used).

This build has a new panel for widgets which allows you to launch and uninstall widgets from within the browser. Widgets will still use the Windows installation system, but it will be much easier to keep track of which widgets you have installed.

To get an idea about why widgets are important, look at how a lot of big companies are looking to standardize on widgets for cross-platform applications.

There will not be a detailed changelog this time around since we are mostly focusing on crashes and the new widgets panel.

Finally, you will have to wait a bit more for Mac and Unix builds due to the work that is being done on those platforms.
