Der AOL Instant Messenger ist Geschichte. Im Oktober wurde das Ende des Chat-Dinosauriers angekündigt, jetzt ist endgültig Schluss. Daten und Gesprächsverläufe wurden gelöscht.

Nach zwanzig Jahren endet die Geschichte des AOL Instant Messengers – der Inhaber Oath hat den den Dienst abgeschaltet, der mindestens eine Generation Internet-Nutzer geprägt hat. Für Kinder der 90er sei AIM ein bedeutender Teil des Lebens gewesen, behauptet Oath-Sprecher Michael Albers in der Ankündigung der Abschaltung. Zwischen den neuen Schwergewichten auf dem Markt der Chat-Umgebungen konnte sich AIM bereits seit Jahren nicht mehr durchsetzen, der Dienst sei überflüssig geworden, so der Betreiber.

AIM basierte auf dem Protokoll OSCAR, das von AOL entwickelt wurde und erst 2008 offengelegt wurde. Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts war die Welt der Chat-Benutzer recht klar aufgeteilt: Während AIM Marktführer in Nordamerika war, nutzten Europäer überwiegend ICQ, das von AOL übernommen wurde und ebenfalls auf OSCAR basierte.

Langes Ende

Während ICQ bereits 2010 nach Russland verkauft wurde und auf dem europäischen Markt keine Rolle mehr spielt, hielt AIM bis jetzt durch. Neben dem Facebook-Messenger und dem ebenfalls zu Facebook gehörenden Anbieter WhatsApp verlor es immer weiter an Bedeutung. Aktuelle Nutzerzahlen der letzten Jahre wurden nicht veröffentlicht. Auf der Homepage von AIM gibt es nur noch eine FAQ und eine Abschiedsnotiz. Nutzerdaten und Gesprächsverläufe sind mit der Abschaltung endgültig verloren, die Mailadressen "@aim.com" bleiben allerdings erhalten.

Nostalgische AIM-Nutzer verabschiedeten sich über den Twitter-Hashtag #aimemories vom Messenger ihrer Jugend.
