Aufgrund mehrfacher Beschwerden von Anwendern bieten die Entwickler des GNU Image Manipulation Program Gimp den Windows-Installer ihres Grafikprogramms ab sofort nicht mehr über SourceForge an. Grund dafür sind die Anzeigen, die der Open-Source-Hoster gelegentlich auf seinen Download-Seiten schaltet und die Anwender dazu verführen wollen, über ihren auffälligen grünen Download-Button ungewünschte Software herunterzuladen.

Das Fass zum Überlaufen habe allerdings der neue SourceForge Installer gebracht, schreiben die Gimp-Macher. Das Tool bündelt Open-Source-Software mit Programmen anderer Hersteller, die bei der Installation der gewünschten Software prominent zur Mitinstallation angeboten werden. Dieses Vorgehen wolle man nicht unterstützen. Gimp für Windows findet man jetzt auf dem ftp-Server des Gimp-Projekts.

Im Sommer war dieser SourceForge Installer erstmals bei Filezilla aufgetaucht, einem populären FTP-Client, der auf SourceForge gehostet ist. Filezilla-Mitentwickler Tim Kosse erklärte damals gegenüber heise open, dass das Filezilla-Projekt an den Umsätzen beteiligt sei, die mit der Adware erzielt werden, und an der Entwicklung des Installers mitgearbeitet habe.

Release Notes

We are releasing GIMP 2.8.18 to fix a vulnerability in the XCF loading code (CVE-2016-4994). With special XCF files, GIMP can be caused to crash, and possibly be made to execute arbitrary code provided by the attacker.

This release includes additional bug fixes since 2.8.16. An important change has happened to the initial startup experience on Microsoft Windows and OS X platforms - any “GIMP is not responding” errors encountered there should be gone.

The source code for GIMP 2.8.18 is available from our downloads page; pre-built packages for Microsoft Windows and OS X will follow shortly.
