Joplin is an open source note taking application that can handle a large number of notes organized into notebooks.

Notes are stored in markdown format and can be searched, modified, tagged, directly in Joplin or using any text editor. Evernote users can even import their notes.

Joplin has no learning curve. It's so well laid out that you can jump right in. Across the top, you can quickly create a new note, to-do or new notebook. You can toggle the sidebar on or off and even change the layout.

ToDo Reminder is a handy tool that you can use to create a list of tasks you need to perform and set it to remind you of them. You can configure the application to inform you of daily tasks and to alert you when a certain one is due. Users can prioritize the tasks by using custom text colors and priority values. ToDo Reminder takes up very little space on your hard drive and can be set to run on Windows start to be sure you won't forget ToDo something.
