Der JavaScript-Server Node.js wurde in der Version 0.8.0 veröffentlicht. Verglichen mit dem Vorgänger konnten die Entwickler die Geschwindigkeit steigern.

Laut den Entwicklern kann mit Node.js v0.8 abhängig von der Puffergröße der Datendurchsatz bei Schreibvorgängen um ca. 100 bis 200 Prozent und bei Lesevorgängen um 10 bis 100 Prozent gesteigert werden. Auch der »hello, world«-HTTP-Server-Benchmark zeigt, dass die neue Node.js-Version deutlich mehr Anfragen pro Sekunde beantworten kann. Die meisten Geschwindigkeitssteigerungen erzielen die Entwickler durch eine verbesserte, an die Bedürfnisse des Node.js-Projekts angepasste JavaScript-Engine V8.

Als Build-System wird nun für alle OS-Plattformen das GYP Meta-Build-System von Scons eingesetzt. Die in Node.js 0.6 abgeschafften Datei-Deskriptoren sind in der neuen Node.js-Version in anderer Form wieder vorhanden. Das Cluster-Modul wurde fast komplett neu geschrieben. Die zugehörige API ist rückwärtskompatibel zu Node.js, aber die Entwickler empfehlen, bestehende Node.js-Anwendungen anzupassen um von dem besseren Verhalten und den Geschwindigkeitssteigerungen zu profitieren. Die Repl-, Readline- und TTY-Module wurden überarbeitet und von unnötigem Code befreit. Sie lassen sich jetzt leichter zur Fehlersuche heranziehen.

Für die kommende Node.js-Version haben sich die Entwickler vorgenommen, die HTTP-Implementierung und die Streams-API zu verbessern. Weiteres Potential sehen sie bei den Punkten SSL, beim VM-Modul und dem Crypto-Modul.

Node.js läuft unter Linux, Mac OS X und Windows. die aktuelle Version ist für 32- und 64-Bit-Architekturen im Download-Bereich des Projekts erhältlich.
