Betternet is an easy to use application to let you surf the web anonymously through a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

The company tries to be transparent by showing their costs and resources to keep the app alive and promises that it will always be free. They say it will be free forever with the plan to be able to support them by installing apps inside the program. At the current time, there are no such links in the program so we assume this might come down the road.

Hotspot Shield leitet die Internet-Verbindung über einen amerikanischen VPN-Server und verschleiert so die eigene IP-Adresse.

Die Umleitung der IP-Adresse hat gleich mehrere Effekte: Zum einen ermöglicht die Freeware so die Verbindung zu verschiedenen Video-Webseiten, die aus lizenzrechtlichen Gründen aus Deutschland nicht erreichbar sind. Zum anderen sorgt die neue IP-Adresse für mehr Privatsphäre. Jegliche Anfragen an Webseiten werden über den VPN-Server geleitet und erhalten entsprechend dessen IP-Adresse, so wird die eigene IP nicht übermittelt und Attacken oder Datensammlung verhindert.

Kleiner Nachteil: Je nach Verkehr auf dem VPN-Server kann die Verbindung ein wenig langsamer werden. Zudem versucht Hotspot Shield, verschiedene weitere Anwendungen zu installieren. Wer hierauf verzichten kann, sollte die entsprechenden Häkchen während der Installation entfernen.

Weniger Speed, dafür mehr Privatsphäre und Sicherheit: Das kostenlose Hotspot Shield macht zwar die Verbindung etwas langsamer, lockt dafür mit einigen Vorteilen.

UnblockDoom uses OpenVPN to accomplish this. Since OpenVPN is Open-Source, anyone can modify the code. Because the program has a simple, one-line description, we're just not sure what it does differently. It is a little nicer to look at and we can only assume the main goal is to circumvent censorship in countries or places where the internet can be limited.

You can mask yourself as being from one of 15 available countries in the drop-down list as well as select a different IP address.

Die Datenschützer des Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) haben sich bei der US-amerikanischen Federal Trade Commission über die Geschäftspraktiken des VPN-Providers AnchorFree beschwert. In ihrer Beschwerde beschreiben sie diese als unfair und betrügerisch ("deceptive"). Das AnchorFree-Angebot Hotspot Shield Free nutze demnach JavaScript, um iFrames mit personalisierten Werbeanzeigen in die Gratis-Version seines VPN-Clients zu injizieren und außerdem den Standort des Nutzers zu tracken. Das sei ein deutlicher Verstoß gegen Absatz 5 des Federal Trade Commission Act.
