Aegisub is an advanced subtitle editor that allows for many advanced effects in the subtitles, apart from basic timed text. It works natively with the Advanced SubStation Alpha format used by many players and editors including Avidemux, Media Player Classic, VLC and others.

Note: The 64-bit version is not recommended even on 64-bit versions of Windows. It does not include support for Avisynth, is often slower, and has had occasional bugs not present in the 32-bit version.

Subtitle editing

    The edit box buttons (bold, italic, colors, etc.) try to do the right thing when multiple lines are selected, rather than just setting all of the lines to the active line's text

    The subtitles grid has gained as Characters Per Second column, with customizable warning and error thresholds (#609)

    Undo now restores the selected lines and cursor position that were active when the change being undone occured

    Double-clicking on a word which is right next to a \N no longer selects the \N along with the word

    Make default subtitle styles customizable: when creating a new file or importing from a format without style information, the styles from a catalog of your choice are automatically imported into the script (#962)

    Add a button to open directly open the style editor for the current line's style (#1746)

    Add Comment to the files which can be pasted over

ccextractor is a fast, easy to use closed captions extractor for MPEG files and not only. Supports HDTV transport streams, DVD and Replay TV. In short ccextractor is a small program that processes MPEG 2 files and extracts closed captions data to generate subtitle files.

You can use this program to create .srt (subtitles) files for your TV captures, have transcripts so you can edit subtitles, etc.

You can pass as many input files as you need. They will be processed in order.
Output will be one single file (either raw or srt). Use this if you made your
recording in several cuts (to skip commercials for example) but you want one
subtitle file with contiguous timing.
