Kurz nach der stabilen Version von Chrome 17 hat Google nun auch eine Beta von Chrome 18 veröffentlicht. Die neue Version kann 2D-Canvas per GPU beschleunigen und unterstützt 3D-Inhalte auch auf älteren GPUs.

Die Betaversion Chrome 18.0.1025.11 unterstützt unter Windows und Mac eine GPU-beschleunigte Darstellung von 2D-Inhalten im Canvas-Element. Davon sollen vor allem 2D-Browserspiele profitieren, die mit dieser HTML5-Technik umgesetzt sind. Zudem sollen Animationen schneller werden.

Je nach System kann es aber sein, dass nicht alle Möglichkeiten zur GPU-Beschleunigung zur Verfügung stehen. Nutzer von Chrome können unter chrome://gpu nachsehen, welche Funktionen auf ihrem System beschleunigt werden.

Google hat die GPU-Beschleunigung in Chrome ganz grundsätzlich verbessert und den Software-Rasterer Swiftshader von Transgaming lizenziert und in Chrome integriert. Damit lassen sich per WebGL dargestellte 3D-Inhalte auch mit älteren GPUs beschleunigen, was bisher nicht möglich war. Die Softwarelösung Swiftshader ist zwar deutlich langsamer als eine GPU, soll die Situation für Besitzer älterer Grafikkarten aber spürbar verbessern. Das gilt im Übrigen auch für Nutzer von Windows XP, die ebenfalls von Swiftshader profitieren.

Wer die Leistungsfähigkeit von Swiftshader testen will, kann Chrome mit den Optionen --blacklist-accelerated-compositing und --blacklist-webgl starten. Nachdem der Download von Swiftshader dann abgeschlossen ist, werden 3D-Inhalte mit der Softwarelösung gerendert statt der eigenen GPU.

Die Beta von Chrome 18 kann ab sofort im Betachannel von Google Chrome heruntergeladen werden.

ChromeHistoryView is a small utility that reads the history data file of Google Chrome Web browser, and displays the list of all visited Web pages in the last days. For each visited Web page, the following information is displayed: URL, Title, Visit Date/Time, Number of visits, number of times that the user typed this address (Typed Count), Referrer, and Visit ID.

Langfristig setzt Google auf OpenID als Authentifizierungsverfahren für Webseiten. Da dessen Verbreitung jedoch noch zu wünschen lässt, arbeitet der Internet-Konzern jetzt an einem eigenen Passwort-Generator, der in den hauseigenen Browser Chrome integriert werden soll. Das Tool soll Seiten, auf denen Nutzerkonten angelegt werden, erkennen – was die Entwickler für den schwierigsten Teil der Arbeit halten. Dort wird das Passwortfeld mit einem kleinen Icon markiert. Klickt der Anwender darauf, schlägt das Programm ein Kennwort vor. Bei Zustimmung des Nutzers wird es in die jeweiligen Felder eingetragen und verschlüsselt im Browser gespeichert.

Eine Billigung des Passworts durch den Anwender ist nach den Worten der Entwickler nötig, da einige Websites spezielle Anforderungen an seine Form oder Länge haben. In Zukunft ließe sich die Passworterzeugung vereinfachen, wenn das in HTML5 vorgesehene Attribut pattern für die jeweiligen Eingabefelder definiert sei. Mit seiner Erweiterung würde Google mit kommerziellen Produkten konkurrieren, die browser-neutral Passwörter erzeugen, verwalten und mit Hilfe von Cloud-Diensten über mehrere Plattformen hinweg synchronisieren.
