Der Suchmaschinenkonzern Google arbeitet derzeit intensiv daran, seinen Browser Chrome auch als Plattform für Spiele zu etablieren. Entscheidende Impulse hierfür soll die Konferenz "New Game" bringen, auf der die Entwicklung von Games auf Basis von HTML5 im Vordergrund steht. Die Veranstaltung nimmt bei Google inzwischen einen recht hohen Stellenwert ein, berichtet das US-Magazin 'ConceivablyTech'.

In der vergangenen Woche veröffentlichte Google einen Aufruf an Entwickler, sich bei der Konferenz, die Anfang November stattfindet, anzumelden. Parallel wurden die Arbeiten an dem nativen Client NaCl 3D intensiviert, der innerhalb von Chrome in einer Sandbox laufen und Spielen einen direkten Zugriff auf die Hardware des jeweiligen Systems bieten soll.

Über die Pepper API soll es Entwicklern dann auch möglich sein, Code in C und C++ innerhalb von Browser-Spielen zu nutzen. Die Performance soll so insbesondere im Grafikbereich deutlich gesteigert werden können. NaCl 3D lag am Donnerstag in der Chromium-Build 98083 in seiner ersten Implementierung vor. Anschließend folgte noch eine Reihe von neuen Revisionen. Ab der Build 98508, die Freitag erschien, soll der Client nun allgemein nutzbar sein.

Aber nicht nur das Grafik-Rendering soll innerhalb des Browsers schneller werden. Auch bei der Bedienung von Browser-Spielen will Google einen Schritt vorankommen. Dafür brachte der Chrome-Entwickler Scott Graham die Joystick-API ins Gespräch. Diese soll es zukünftig ermöglichen, Games innerhalb der Browser-Umgebung mit typischen Spiele-Bediensystemen wie Joysticks oder Gamepads zu nutzen.

Laut Graham sind aktuell Prototypen für eine Spezifikation in Arbeit. Genaueres wird sich dazu erst sagen lassen, wenn Google der Allgemeinheit einen Blick darauf gewährt. Allerdings gibt es hierzu auch kritische Stimmen. Angesichts dessen, dass auch bei Mozilla an dem Projekt gearbeitet wird, befürchtet man offenbar eine Fragmentierung, die Probleme für die Entwickler mit sich bringen sollte. Stattdessen würden es die Kritiker lieber sehen, dass unter dem Dach der Web-Standardisierungsorganisation W3C gemeinsam an einer allgemeingültigen Lösung gearbeitet wird.

    New feature: pricacy.ini (BETA). In the wake of new features such as standard activated WebGL it has become necessary to update things like the GPU-Black list from time to time automatically, as incompatible combinations of GPU + OS + driver can cause instability and (in very rare cases) system crashes. But beside that professionals who "know what they are doing" don't want this components even if there are not transporting any private data. With the privacy.ini feature it is now possible to disable these components (at your own risk). How does it work? Just download the attached privacy.ini, unzip into the Iron-directory and (re)start the browser. Attention: While pricacy.ini is active, (at the moment) no extensions can be installed from the Google page.
