Der Suchmaschinenkonzern Google wird seinen Browser Chrome mit Unterstützung für das WebRTC-Protokoll ausstatten. Dadurch können zukünftig Chats und Videokonferenzen direkt im Browser gestartet werden. Webentwickler können auf das Protokoll dabei aus eigenen Web-Anwendungen heraus zugreifen.

Google kam durch die Übernahme der Firma Global IT Solutions (GIPS), einem Spezialisten für Internet-Telefonie und Video-Conferencing, in den Besitz des WebRTC-Protokolls. Kürzlich wurde die Technologie als Open Source-Software frei zugänglich gemacht. Außerdem integrierte Google das Protokoll in Google Mail/Gmail.

Nun soll auch der Browser von der Technologie profitieren. "Unser Ziel ist es, Chrome mit Real-Time Communications (RTC)-Fähigkeiten auszustatten, die mit einfachen JavaScript-APIs angesprochen werden können", erklärte Henrik Andreasson, einer der Entwickler, der mit der Übernahme von GIPS zu Google kam.

Aktuell arbeite man daran, sowohl die Browser-Engine Webkit als auch die nativen Audio- und Video-Bibltiotheken mit der Technologie zu verzahnen. Als Audio-Codecs kommen dabei iSAC bei einer bestehenden Breitband-Verbindung beziehungsweise iLBC bei langsameren Verbindungen zum Einsatz. Beide stammen ebenfalls aus dem Besitz von GIPS. Als Video-Codec wird Googles VP8/WebM dienen.

Durch die Freigabe von WebRTC als Open Source will Google auch andere Browser-Hersteller wie Mozilla und Opera ermutigen, die Technologie in ihre Browser zu integrieren. Das wäre die Voraussetzung, damit sie bei einer größeren Zahl von Webanwendungen zum Einsatz kommt.

Eine Bedrohung ist dies allerdings für Software-Anbieter wie Skype. Diese könnten einen guten Teil ihrer Gelegenheitsnutzer verlieren, wenn die Anwender zukünftig beispielsweise direkt in ihrem Social Network oder Forum miteinander über eine Videoverbindung miteinander in Kontakt treten können.
