Nachdem Google vor einigen Wochen ein Erweiterungssystem in seinen Browser Chrome implementiert hat, steht seit gestern auch die Extension Gallery zur Verfügung. Zum Start findet man dort über 300 Erweiterungen.

Damit lassen sich die Funktionen des Browsers auf einfache Art und Weise erweitern, ganz nach den eigenen Vorstellungen. Der "Google Mail Checker" beispielsweise platziert ein neues Symbol neben der Adressleiste, das die Zahl der ungelesenen E-Mails anzeigt. Auch die beliebte Bookmark-Synchronisation Xmarks, die man bereits von Firefox kennt, kann installiert werden.

Google hat nach eigenen Angaben sehr viel Wert darauf gelegt, dass die Extensions die Performance des Browsers nicht negativ beeinflussen. Zudem will man die Entwicklung so einfach wie möglich gestalten, indem man auf bekannte Web-Technologien setzt. Die Programmierer können ihre Arbeit ohne Umwege in die Extension Gallery laden - nur in speziellen Fällen ist eine manuelle Überprüfung durch Google erforderlich.

Derzeit kann man Extensions nur in der Betaversion von Google Chrome 4 installieren. Wann die finale Ausgabe des Browsers erhältlich sein soll, ist nicht bekannt.

1. Fixed access right problem in Win7.

ChromePlus 1.3.5.0 released.

Nicht einmal anderthalb Jahre nach Erstveröffentlichung von Google Chrome ist der Browser schon bei Version 4 angekommen – genauer gesagt bei 4.0.249.78. Wichtigste Neuerungen, die bisher nur Nutzern der Beta-Versionen zur Verfügung standen, sind die Synchronisation  von Lesezeichen über mehrere Browserinstallationen hinweg und die Erweiterungen, von denen es bereits mehr als 1800 gibt.

Google wendet sich, wie im Dezember angekündigt, allmählich von seinem Plug-in Gears ab und ersetzt es durch integrierte Funktionen – Chrome 4 kann mit Hilfe des Web-Storage-API Daten auch ohne Gears in einer lokalen Datenbank speichern und synchronisieren. Alternativ steht das (bislang nur von Safari unterstützte) Web-SQL-Database-API zur Verfügung, das den Zugriff auf lokale Datenbanken per SQL ermöglicht.

Das WebSockets-API erlaubt es Skripten, ohne HTTP-Overhead über das Netz zu kommunizieren und persistente Verbindungen aufzubauen. Ein "Notification API" soll unter Windows Benachrichtigungen an die Statusleiste der Betriebssystem-Oberfläche weitergeben können. Chrome 4 soll außerdem JavaScript schneller ausführen als der Vorgänger.

Derzeit muss die Aktualisierung auf Version 4 noch manuell angefordert werden, das automatische Update wird erst in den nächsten Tagen freigeschaltet. Linux-Anwender können Erweiterungen in der Beta-Version nutzen, Mac-Besitzer müssen auf die Neuerungen noch ein bisschen warten.
