Euch fehlt die Möglichkeit, Sessions in Google Chrome abzuspeichern? Zum Beispiel wollt ihr euch ein Set anlegen, welches ihr zum arbeiten oder whatever angelegt habt? Dann solltet ihr vielleicht mal den Google Chrome Session Manager ausprobieren.



Anderes Anwendungsbeispiel: ihr habt 5-10 Tabs offen und müsst aus irgendeinem Grunde weg. Dann könnt ihr den Session Manager auch gut einsetzen. Alle Tabs werden als Set gespeichert und können von euch ratz fatz wieder aufgerufen werden. Auch könnt ihr bereits gespeicherte Sessions um weitere Tabs erweitern.

Google hat angekündigt, dass die Nutzer des Browsers Chrome in Zukunft ohne Unterstützung für den weit verbreiteten H.264-Standard auskommen müssen. Wird dieses Format für Clips verwendet, die über den Video-Tag von HTML5 eingebunden werden, kann Chrome diese bald nicht mehr abspielen.

Der zuständige Product Manager Mike Jazayeri erklärt im Chromium-Blog, dass man sich auf Technologien konzentrieren will, die unter offenen Gesichtspunkten entwickelt werden. Gemeint ist der hauseigene Videocodec WebM, der immer mehr Unterstützer findet. Chrome wird zukünftig WebM und Theora unterstützen. Über Support für weitere Formate wird nachgedacht.

Die Veränderungen sollen erst in den kommenden Monaten umgesetzt werden. Die Ankündigung erfolgt bereits jetzt, da man den Website-Betreibern und Inhalteanbietern die Möglichkeit geben will, sich auf die neue Situation einzustellen. Man will also erreichen, dass möglichst viele Videos in das WebM-Format umgewandelt werden, bevor der Support für H.264 wegfällt.

Die MPEG LA als Verwalter von H.264 erlaubt die kostenlose Nutzung des Formats für alle Anbieter von kostenfreien Streaming-Angeboten. Für die kommerzielle Nutzung werden Lizenzgebühren fällig.

Nachdem Google in der letzten Woche ankündigte, seinen Browser Chrome zukünftig ohne Unterstützung für den Video-Standard H.264 auszuliefern, wurde von vielen Seiten Kritik laut. Dennoch bleibt das Unternehmen bei seiner Entscheidung und verteidigt sie.

In einem Blog-Beitrag des Product Managers Mike Jazayeri heißt es, dass man ein Zeichen für offene Internettechnologien setzen wolle, da man der Meinung ist, dass die Innovationen im Web davon abhängen. Würde man Geld für die Lizenzierung des H.264-Codecs ausgeben, würde dies die Entwicklung des offenen Webs behindern. Da der Video-Tag aus HTML5, den diese Entscheidung betrifft, derzeit kaum verwendet wird, hat man sich bereits zu diesem frühen Zeitraum dafür entschieden, H.264 zukünftig nicht mehr zu unterstützen.

Google stellte klar, dass der Wegfall der Unterstützung für H.264 lediglich den Video-Tag aus HTML5 betrifft. Technologien wie Flash und Silverlight, die man problemlos in Chrome nutzen kann, werden auch weiterhin das Abspielen von entsprechend kodierten Videos ermöglichen.

In der Vergangenheit wurde Google vor allem von Mozilla und Opera dafür kritisiert, dass man H.264 unterstützt. Die beiden Unternehmen hatten schon frühzeitig ausschließlich auf offene Formate wie Ogg Theora und WebM gesetzt. Microsoft und Apple dagegen, die den Internet Explorer und Safari anbieten, unterstützen H.264. Der Internet Explorer 9 soll mit Hilfe eines Plugins in der Lage sein, WebM-Videos abzuspielen.
