InnoTek hat seine Virtualisierungslösung VirtualBox unter der GNU General Public License (GPL) als Open Source freigegeben. Die Software, die auf 32-bittigen Linux- und Windows-Hosts läuft, führt unter anderem Windows NT 4, 2000, XP, Server 2003 und Vista, OS/2 Warp, Linux mit Kernel 2.4 und 2.6 sowie OpenBSD als Gäste aus. VirtualBox lässt sich sowohl in einem Workstation-Modus mit grafischer Bedienschnittstelle als auch per Kommandozeile gesteuert in einem Servermodus betreiben. Der Zugriff auf virtuelle Maschinen ohne GUI erfolgt über das RDP-Protokoll.

Bislang wurde VirtualBox vor allem von Behörden zur Desktopvirtualisierung eingesetzt. Im Test liefen sowohl Vista als auch Opensuse 10.2 stabil und performant unter VirtualBox.

VirtualBox hat ein Update seines Open-Source-Virtualisierers freigegeben. VirtualBox 1.3.4 beseitigt diverse Bugs und Ungereimtheiten des vor wenigen Wochen als Open Source freigegebenen Vmware-Konkurrenten und sorgt für eine Reihe von Verbesserungen in der grafischen Bedienoberfläche, bei der Installation und bei spezifischen Gastsystemen. Details nennt das Changelog.

VirtualBox ist eine Virtualisierungssoftware, die unter Linux sowie Windows läuft und eine Vielzahl von x86-Betriebssystemen als Gast unterstützt. Sie lässt sich ähnlich Vmware Workstation über ein GUI, aber auch über die Kommandozeile steuern. Der Zugriff auf die Gastsysteme in den virtuellen Maschinen ist dann über den integrierten RDP-Server möglich. Die Software steht in einer Open-Source-Variante und einer für den privaten Gebrauch kostenlosen proprietären Version mit erweiterten Features zur Verfügung.

Innotek hat Version 1.4 seiner Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox freigegeben. Die Software steht in einer Open-Source-Variante und einer für den privaten Gebrauch kostenlosen kommerziellen Version mit erweitertem Funktionsumfang zur Verfügung.

VirtualBox steht nun auch einer Version für Wirtssysteme mit 64-Bit-Linux zum Download bereit. Eine Variante für x64-Windows ist laut Hersteller ebenfalls fertig, muss aber noch kompiliert werden. Der Virtualisierer kann in der neuen Version die Festplattendateien (Endung .vmdk) der VMware-Virtualisierungsprodukte direkt benutzen. Auch der direkte Zugriff auf physische Platten und Partitionen soll möglich sein. Neu ist auch die Unterstützung für serielle Ports. USB-Geräte können dynamisch einer virtuellen Maschine zugewiesen und auch wieder an das Wirtssystem zurückgegeben werden. Der Zugriff auf die Gastsysteme in den virtuellen Maschinen ist über den integrierten RDP-Server dank Session-Shadowing von mehreren RDP-Clients aus gleichzeitig möglich.

Eine vollständige Liste aller Änderungen steht im Changelog. Außerdem bereitet Innotek nach eigenen Angaben zur Zeit die zweite Beta-Version der Mac-Version von VirtualBox vor, die dann unter anderem vollen USB-Support mitbringen soll. Der fehlt in der aktuellen Beta 1 noch.

Innotek hat die Version 1.5.0 der freien Virtualisierungslösung VirtualBox für Linux und Windows freigegeben. Die neue Version kann erstmals Fenster des Gastes seamless auf dem Desktop des Host-Systems anzeigen, statt immer den kompletten Desktop des Gastsystems in einem eigenen Fenster darzustellen. Weitere Neuerungen sind die Unterstützung von 64-Bit-Windows als Host, virtuelle serielle Ports sowie das Booten von Gastsystemen via PXE übers Netz. Hinzu kommen zahlreiche Verbesserungen und Bugfixes.

Innotek hat die Version 1.5.2 von Virtualbox veröffentlicht. Die freie Virtualisierungslösung des deutschen Herstellers erfährt damit eine Reihe von Bugfixes und kleineren Verbesserungen. So lassen sich jetzt Solaris und der neue Linux-Kernel 2.6.23 stabil und performant als Gastsystemen einsetzen.

VirtualBox läuft auf 32- und 64-bittigen aktuellen Windows-Versionen, vielen gängigen Linux-Distributionen (darunter auch die diesen Monat erschienenen Community-Distributionen OpenSuse 10.3 und Ubuntu 7.10) sowie MacOS X. Die Software unterstützt eine eine lange Liste von Gastsystemen. VirtualBox steht in einer Open-Source-Edition (OSE) und in einer für den privaten Gebrauch kostenlosen proprietären Version mit einigen erweiterten Fähigkiten zum Download bereit.

 Sun hat die Version 2.1 des freien Virtualisierers VirtualBox freigegeben. Die Software nutzt jetzt die Virtualisierungsunterstützung neuerer AMD- und Intel-Prozessoren auch unter Mac OS X und unterstützt die neuen Virtualisierungsfunktionen in Intels Nehalem-Prozessor wie die Virtualisierung von Speichertabellen (nested page tables) und das schnellere Umschalten zwischen virtueller Maschine und Hypervisor.

Die Disk-Image-Formate VMDK (VMware) und VHD (Microsoft) werden jetzt vollständig unterstützt; so ist es beispielweise möglich, Snapshots anzulegen. Die Netzwerkanbindung virtueller Maschinen über Network Address Translation (NAT) auf dem Host soll schneller geworden sein, das direkte Einbinden virtueller Maschinen ins LAN via Bridge leichter aufzusetzen sein. Noch experimentell sind die Unterstützung von 64-Bit-Gastsystemen auf 32-Bit-Hosts und 3D-beschleunigte Grafik im Gastsystem via OpenGL.

VirtualBox steht zum Download für Windows-, Mac-OS-X-, Linux- und Solaris-Hosts bereit. Der Virtualisierer unterstützt zahlreiche Gastsysteme. Die Software steht in einer GPL-lizenzierten Open-Source-Variante (OSE) und einer um einige Features erweiterten, für den privaten Einsatz kostenlosen, kommerziell lizenzierten Version zur Verfügung.

VirtualBox-Hersteller Innotek hatte die bis dahin nur im Projektgeschäft eingesetzte Virtualisierungslösung Anfang 2007 als Open Source freigegeben. Ein Jahr später übernahm Sun den deutschen Software-Hersteller und pflegt VirtualBox seitdem weiter.

Mit der neuen Version 3.0 seiner "Virtual Desktop Infrastruktur" (VDI) unterstützt Sun Microsystems nun auch das hauseigene "Sun xVM VirtualBox".

Bislang setzte Sun dort auf "ESX" vom Virtualisierungs-Pionier VMware. Sun VDI 3.0 kommt nun mit eigenem Virtualisierungs-Layer auf Basis von xVM Virtual Box, der sich auch im Mischbetrieb mit VMware ESX nutzen lässt. Der Sun-Layer enthält einen RDP-Server (Remote Desktop Protocol) und kann damit virtuelle Desktops auf Basis von Windws (2000, XP oder Vista), OpenSolaris oder Linux darstellen. Als Endgeräte eignen sich herkömmliche PCs und Macs, aber auch Thin Clients wie Suns eigene "Sun Rays".

Sun stellt besonders die Wirtschaftlichkeit seiner Lösung in Kombination mit den eigenen "Open-Storage"-Produkten der 7000er-Reihe heraus, auf denen sich die im Virtualisierungs-Layer erzeugten Virtuellen Maschinen (VMs) ablegen lassen. Der Datenzugriff erfolgt dabei über iSCSI. Das System stellt laut Hersteller Golden Master Images in beliebiger Anzahl mithilfe von Snapshots zur Verfügung.

Weitere Features von Sun VDI 3.0 sind mehrere virtuelle Desktops pro Nutzer (mit Wahlmöglichkeit beim Log-in), Integration mit einem vorhandenen Active-Directory-Verzeichnisdienst, Unterstützung für mehrere "Virtual-Center"-Server von VMware in großen Umgebungen, Erstellen von VM-Disk-Images-Clones über platzsparende ZFS-Snapshots sowie ein zentrales Installationsprogramm für alle Kernkomponenten.

Sun VDI 3.0 umfasst die "Sun-Ray"-Software, "Sun Secure Global Desktop", einen Connection Broker, xVM VirtualBox sowie die Datenbank MySQL für die Benutzerverwaltung. Eine Testversion ist kostenlos erhältlich, daneben gibt es verschiedene Subskriptionsmodelle mit Standard- und Premium-Software-Service. Die Preise pro Nutzer und Jahr beginnen bei 40 US-Dollar.

Suns Virtualisierungssoftware mit beschleunigter 3D-Grafik

Suns Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox unterstützt in der Version 2.2 das neue Open Virtualization Format (OVF) und bietet die Möglichkeit, virtuelle Appliances zu erstellen - fertig konfigurierte virtuelle Maschinen, die weitergegeben werden können.
Der von der Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) entwickelte OVF-Standard ermöglicht es, virtuelle Appliances über verschiedene Virtualisierungslösungen hinweg einzusetzen. Der DMTF gehören unter anderem Citrix (Xen), Microsoft, Novell, Sun und VMWare an.

Darüber hinaus verfügt VirtualBox 2.2 über einen optimierten Hypervisor und unterstützt über OpenGL beschleunigte 3D-Grafik unter Linux und Solaris. Gastsysteme können zudem auf bis zu 16 GByte RAM zugreifen und ein neuer Netzwerkmodus für Host-Schnittstellen soll den Betrieb von Serveranwendungen auf virtuellen Maschinen vereinfachen.

Sun VirtualBox 2.2 steht ab sofort unter sun.com zum Download bereit. Für den privaten Gebrauch ist die Software kostenlos, für größere Installationen bietet Sun Abomodelle ab 30 US-Dollar pro Nutzer und Jahr an.

Sun unterstützt FreeBSD nicht offiziell

Die Entwickler der Virtualisierungslösung VirtualBox portieren ihre Software derzeit auf das Unix-Derivat FreeBSD. Einige Funktionen wurden bereits umgesetzt, es soll aber noch viel zu tun geben. VirtualBox-Anbieter Sun unterstützt die Portierung nicht.
Die freie Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox läuft bereits unter FreeBSD, haben die Entwickler bekanntgegeben. Wer die Software nutzen möchte, muss den Quelltext jedoch noch selbst aus dem Quellcodeverwaltungssystem laden und übersetzen. Den Einsatz auf Produktivsystemen empfehlen die Entwickler noch nicht.

Die Virtualisierungstechnik haben sie ihren Angaben zufolge bereits portiert und auch das Qt4-Frontend ist unter FreeBSD verfügbar. Sound funktioniert über das Open Sound System und die NAT-Funktion lässt sich ebenfalls verwenden. Andere Funktionen wie Bridged- und Host-only-Netzwerk sowie Unterstützung für ACPI, OpenGL und USB hingegen sind noch nicht implementiert.

Das liegt auch daran, dass die Entwickler VirtualBox in ihrer Freizeit portieren. Anbieter Sun unterstützt FreeBSD nämlich noch nicht als Plattform. Ob sich das ändern wird, ist bisher nicht bekannt. Anwender sollen gefundene Fehler aus diesem Grunde aber nicht im offiziellen Bugtracker melden.

VirtualBox wurde ursprünglich von der deutschen Firma Innotek entwickelt, die Anfang 2008 von Sun übernommen wurde. Die Software steht unter der GPL und ist offiziell für Linux, MacOS X, Solaris und Windows verfügbar.

Die VirtualBox-Entwickler haben eine erste Beta von Version 3.0 ihres Desktop-Virtualisierers vorgelegt. Die Vorabversion, die nicht für den Produktiveinsatz gedacht ist, gibt einen Ausblick auf diverse neue Features, die in dem neuen Release Eingang finden sollen. So enthält die Beta Support für Guest-SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessing) mit bis zu 32 virtuellen CPUs.

Auch im 3D-Bereich hat sich einiges getan. Windows-Gastsysteme sollen in den Genuss von Unterstützung von Direct3D 8 und 9 kommen – allerdings ist sie noch experimentell. Auch OpenGL 2.0 (für Windows, Linux und Solaris) wird unterstützt. Die Virtualisierungssoftware von Sun steht unter der GPL zum freien Download für Windows, Mac OS X, Linux und OpenSolaris zur Verfügung.

Probleme im SMP-Betrieb beseitigt

Sun hat die zweite Betaversion der Virtualisierungssoftware VirtualBox 3.0 veröffentlicht. Die korrigiert einige Probleme, die die erste Betaversion betrafen. VirtualBox 3.0 wird das nächste große Updates mit Funktionen wie Gast-SMP und OpenGL.
In VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 2 haben die Entwickler einen Fehler korrigiert, der zu einer hohen CPU-Last durch Windows-Gäste führte. Hinzu kommen verschiedene Geschwindigkeitsoptimierungen beim SMP-Betrieb und die Unterstützung für Windows 7 wurde verbessert.

VirtualBox 3.0 wird das nächste große Update des freien Virtualisierers. Zu den neuen Funktionen zählt die Unterstützung für SMP bei Gastsystemen, so dass eine virtuelle Maschine bis zu 32 CPUs nutzen kann. Das funktioniert nur bei Computern mit VT-x oder AMD-V. In Windows-Gästen soll der Anwender Programme und Spiele nutzen können, die Direct3D 8 oder 9 verwenden. Diese Funktion ist als experimentell gekennzeichnet. Bei Windows-, Linux- und Solaris-Gästen wird außerdem OpenGL 2.0 unterstützt.

VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 2 ist ab sofort zum Download für Windows, MacOS X, Linux und Solaris verfügbar.
