Release Notes
The Blender Foundation and online developer community are proud to present Blender 2.77, released March 19th, 2016!
Cycles Rendering has better Subsurface Scattering, GPU support for Smoke/Fire and Point Density, and a few other features and optimizations.
User Interface has faster OpenGL rendering and better Anti-Aliasing, and other improvements
Modeling now has an edit-mode boolean tool, better decimate modifier, selection tools
Sequencer has a Gaussian Blur effect speedup, and other strip and modifier improvements
Sculpting/Painting has better extruding and weight painting tools
Animation has a new constraint interpolation method, and improvements in graph editor, dope sheet, armatures and motion paths
Grease pencil now has stroke sculpting, and several other workflow improvements
Library handling has been improved to better manage missing and deleted datablocks
Game Engine has a few new small features
A new Add-on supports packing .blend files and their dependencies, some other IO Add-on was improved, and Python was upgraded
OpenVDB caching is now supported for smoke/volumetric simulations, multithreading is now massively supported, and also 2D stabilization node, Image editor, Cubemap and spotlights were improved
Support for Windows XP was removed, and the SCons build system too.
And, as usual, a massive bug fixing!

GPU Rendering:

CUDA rendering now uses less per-thread memory, reducing the base memory required to render an empty scene by about 50% (999d5a6)
OpenCL devices now support float4 textures (e.g. HDR textures). (76481ea)

Subdivision and Displacement:
While still an experimental feature that is not officially supported and should be considered incomplete, the subdivision and displacement system has been significantly improved.
Subdivision is now adaptive so near and far objects automatically get more and less subdivisions respectively. (ebfdd7da)
Dicing rate is now a global option, with per-object dicing rate multipliers. (9f39619d)
Per object subdivision settings are now found in the subdivision surface modifier, while displacement settings are now part of the material.

Sound strips now either show the waveform or the stip name/file name/duration, but never both.
SCULPTING / PAINTING:
Sculpting:

ANIMATION:
Bendy Bones - Advanced B-Bones for Easier + Simple Rigging:
You can now directly control the shape of B-Bones using a series of properties instead of being restricted to trying to indirectly control them through the neighbouring bones. See the "Bendy Bones" panel...
B-Bones can be shaped in EditMode to define a "curved rest pose" for the bone. This is useful for things like eyebrows and mouths/eyelids
You can now make B-Bones use custom bones as their reference bone handles, instead of only using the parent/child bones. To do so, enable the "Use Custom Reference Handles" toggle. If none are specified, then the BBone will only use the Bendy Bone properties.
Constraints Head/Tail option can now slide along the B-Bone shape, instead of just linearly interpolating between the endpoints of the bone.
Drivers:
Numerous changes have been made to streamline the process of setting up and editing drivers in Blender. These include:
A new "eyedropper" tool and for setting up drivers easier
Support for easier keyframing of how corrective drivers behave
Eyedropper for Faster Driver Setup:
There is now an eyedropper tool for quicker and easier driver setup 0512e20. This is a long requested tool for improving the workflow for setting up drivers, as it should make it easier and faster to set up new drivers in a more interactive fashion.
Keyframing for Corrective Drivers:
When trying to insert a keyframe on a driven property (using I, or with autokeying enabled), the keyframes will get created on the Driver's F-Curve (instead of creating a new FCurve that goes into the active action, but will never do anything). Furthermore, the x-value of the new keyframe will be the current result of the driver expression.
This way, it becomes easier to create corrective drivers, as you can position all the targets the driver depends on, then adjust the driver value until it does what you need, and then you keyframe that value to bake it into the Driver F-Curve (in effect, "training" the computer how to behave in that case).
PyDrivers:
Non number properties can now be referenced (vectors, arrays, strings, data-blocks etc), which the expression can access and further expand.
Add 'self' option (allows for drivers to references their own data - bones, objects, etc).
UI for Driver Editing:
Driver variable names now get validated (and flagged if invalid) to help you avoid choosing names which will not be able to be used in the expressions. If an error is detected, click on the error indicator icon to see a list of reasons why the variable name cannot be used.
The type selector for driver variables is now located beside the name field for each driver, and each variable type is now identified using an icon in this more compact UI.
It is now possible to copy and paste all driver variables between drivers. This makes it easier to reuse the same set of targets for multiple drivers. Note: The paste operator has an option to replace all the variables instead of adding new ones at the end of the list.
Animation Editors:
Object datablocks are now sorted alphabetically by default

Graph Editor:
Ctrl+LMB to insert keyframes will now leave only the newly added keyframes selected, making it easier to quickly tweak the newly added keyframes. The old behaviour (i.e. all previously selected keyframes are untouched) can be accessed by using Ctrl-Shift + LMB
The Properties Region now has tabs, to make it easier to navigate when there are lots of Driver Variables or FModifiers
NLA Editor:
The position of action-local markers (i.e. to the ones used to reference poses in Pose Library actions) is now drawn on NLA Strips to make it easier to synchronise timing across multiple strips (fab4b90). For example, if you need to time sound effects to hit when certain parts of various action strips occur, you can add local markers to the actions, and then use these markers as guides when lining up the strips to time them. Another example is for syncing when footsteps occur.
FModifiers:
Use a dropdown for selecting which type of FModifier gets created, bringing this more in line with Constraints (35a089d)
The properties-region operators for editing FModifiers by default operate on the active data (FCurve/NLA Strip) only. However, they also have new options which allow them to operate on all selected data instead. (344c17f, c97b0b1)
Keyframe Types:
There's now a setting to control what type of keyframes will be created when inserting new keyframes (570fbba).
This is the new dropdown located between the AutoKeying and KeyingSet widgets on the timeline header.
There are now a set of dynamically-generated preview icons for each keyframe type. These are visible in the "Keyframe Type" lists (e.g. R in the Dope Sheet, and the keyframe type selector), and will update automatically when the theme colours change.

When using a bone from another armature as the target for a constraint, Ctrl - Shift - C will now look inside the non-active armature and use its active bone, provided that armature is in Pose Mode. This makes it easier to set up cross-armature constraints (de6064eab1)

In effect, this has some similarities to a "Freeze Transforms" tool, for use when you cannot actually change the geometry (e.g. on an Empty)
AltG, AltR, AltS will now only clear the normal transforms. Use Alt⇧ ShiftG, Alt⇧ ShiftR, and Alt⇧ ShiftS to clear both the normal and delta transforms
The "Animated Transforms to Deltas" (which does a similar job, except it adjusts all existing animation data instead of the current transform) has also been moved to the Apply menu (it was in the Transform menu instead)
GREASE PENCIL:
The previous implementation (from 2.77 and earlier), links the layer with the stroke, so any variation in the stroke must be controlled by the layer, and this reduces the possible options. Now, the thickness was moved to stroke, and color to a new palette color instead of saving this information in layer. Now, the layer is only a container, and strokes can use different color, strength and thickness in the same layer.
As result of the redesign, the layer panel changed.
The color are grouped in palettes. A palette is a set of color that can define a mood for the scene, for example the same color can be defined in "Day palette" and "Night palette" and a simple palette switch, will change all strokes color in all layers.
Drawing brushes panel:
This panel defines the parameters used when drawing new strokes. A set of predefined brushes is created automatically.
In order to get these brushes work properly, a drawing tablet device with pressure sensitivity is mandatory.
The new available parameters are:
Thickness: Number of pixels for full pressure strokes. The thickness can be lower depending of the pressure.
Sensibility: Adjust the sensibility of the thickness to the pressure of the pencil on the tablet. This pressure can be disabled using the right small button.
Additionally, a randomness factor can be enabled using the right button.
Strength: Similar to sensibility, but affect the saturation of the color. This parameter allows to get effects as color fading or watercolor.
The strength can be changed using the new "strength" sculpt brush.
Randomness: Defines the level of randomness (if enabled) for sensibility and strength.
Jitter: Define a jitter randomness in the stroke.
Angle: Defines the angle when the thickness of the stroke will be 100%. Any change in the direction will change the thickness.
Angle factor: Defines the effect for drawing angle changes in the thickness.
The Angle and Angle Factor parameters allow to create drawing brushes as markers that change the thickness depending of the angle of drawing. This gets a more artistic drawing and less "computer" lines.
Curves panel:
This panel allows to adjust the parameters used with tablets to get personal preferences.
When the user draws a stroke, the system get the brush information and combined with color information and pressure, generates the stroke.
Arrange strokes:
The new design creates a new request for arrange strokes in the layer. With the old system, each layer contained only one color, so using the layer up/down operator, the strokes could be arranged.
With the new design the same layer can use several colors, so it requires a new set of operators to arrange the strokes. These operators apply only to the same layer. To arrange the layers, the old up/down operator can be used as usual.
Palette workflow:
In this section we describe the workflow corresponding to palettes and colors. A palette must contain at least 1 color. The interface will not allow to delete the last color of the palette. The interface will avoid that the user delete all the palettes. Any GP Data must have at least one palette with one color.
Delete palette:
The user will press a button to delete a palette, but if there is only a palette, the operation will be disabled. If there are more than one palette, all colors of the old palette will be transferred to the new selected palette. If the color exist in the new palette (same name), the stroke is linked to new color. If the color does not exist in the new palette, a new color is added to the palette in order to keep the stroke.
Delete palette color:
Delete a color will remove the color from the palette. A palette must contain at least one color, so the last one cannot be deleted. If a color with strokes is removed, all strokes of this color are removed.
Change palette color:
Any change to line color or fill color, will change any stroke of any layer using this color.
Set stroke color:
The user will be able to select several strokes, and pressing a button set the current selected color as new color to all selected strokes.
Stroke Quality Improvements:
Several new features have been added to improved the quality of strokes drawn using Grease Pencil:
Smoothing Factor and Smoothing Iterations for new strokes
Subdivision Steps for new strokes
These settings are per-brush settings that are applied after each stroke is drawn, when converting from 2D/screenspace coordinates to 3D/dataspace coordinates. These are per-brush settings so that you can apply different levels of smoothing to different types of strokes (i.e. higher smoothing and/or subdivision for final "beauty", and less smoothing/subdivision for initial "blocking" strokes).

Parenting:
Now is possible to parent a layer to any object, armature or bone. The strokes of the layer will follow parent transformations.
Compositing:
Now the grease pencil layers create a pass inside opengl render result. This result can be exported to EXR multilayer and used in composition.

The "Delete Active Frame" operator can now be accessed using DX (anywhere), as well as ? ShiftX (Edit Strokes Mode only) or the Delete menu (92a3ac4). This makes it easier to quickly get rid of throwaway scribbles made while recording a video tutorial or during a dailies/review session.
The Sculpt cursor is now more visible on a light coloured background (e.g. white or light gray). It is now drawn with a double ring - an inner light-coloured ring, and a darker outer ring to make it stand out on white backgrounds.

Reproject Strokes:
The "Reproject Strokes" tool for fixing the problems caused when the 3D cursor ended up accidentally jumping around in space, and messing up your drawings.
This operator helps fix up this mess by taking the selected strokes, projecting them to screenspace (i.e. "flattening" the strokes back on to the screen), and then putting them back out into 3D space again. As a result, it should be as if you had directly drawn the whole thing again, from the current viewpoint, but without losing the pressure/strength info.
Unfortunately, if there was originally some depth information present (i.e. you already started reshaping the sketch in 3D), then that will get lost during this process. But so far, my tests indicate that this seems to work well enough.

Animation Tools:
It is possible to independently disable the display of onion skins before or after the current frame by setting the relevant Before/After setting to -1. For example, this could be used to disable the "next" frame, if leaving it visible proves too distracting.

Datablock Remapping:
A core low-level feature regarding datablocks management has been added, called 'ID remapping'. It allows to replace a given datablock by another, while Blender is running. Until now it was partially possible for a few types of datablock, but highly confusing code spread across the code base, often not totally in sync, missing some pieces here and there, etc.
At a lower level, this work also aimed at cleaning up and simplifying ID management code (copying, making unique, deleting, appending/linking, making local, etc.).

A new option allows animating the rest shape of cloth using shape keys or modifiers placed above the Cloth modifier. From here you can individually activate the menus you like to use.
If the menu conflicts with another favorite, there's no need to activate it.
You can activate any combination & save as user settings so your activation are available next time you start Blender.
Addons Preferences are saved by using the "Save User Settings" button.

Better Threading Handling:
Blender is now massively multi-threaded (that is, on multi-core CPUs, it can execute several tasks in parallel), its renders of course (since a loooong time ago), but also more recently its depsgraph and many other tasks.
This is raising an issue - having 8 to 16 threads running on an 8-core CPU is good, having 80 or more is bad, basically because all those threads will waste a lot of time waiting for the right to use a CPU core, and because thread managing and context switching costs a fair amount of CPU time…
Main cause of that exploding number of threads is the usage of OpenMP, which is a library that makes it really easy to parallelize the execution of small chunks of code. So a (long-run, non-urgent) task was decided, to replace those OMP usages by proper calls to our own multi-threading code, which ensures we never get too much threads running.

2D Stabilisator improvments:
The video stabilizator has been reworked to improve handling of more complicated movement and especially real-world footage with laterally travelling or panning camera. In such a situation, the stabilizer tends to push the image out of the visible area in an attempt to hold a fixed position. To deal with that problem, there is now a full set of controls for a "canvas camera" where you can set and animate the expected camera movement, rotation and zoom to follow a dynamic shot.
Internally, the stabilizator now calculates a weighted average of all contributions instead of just using the median point. In practice this means adding more tracks now actually has a tangible effect; using more tracks might help to cancel out inaccuracies or spurious, perspective induced movements.
Previously, the stabilzator was limited to using a single rotation track. Based on this new calculation, we now support an arbitrary number of rotation tracking points in addition to the location tracking points. The contributions of these rotation tracks will be averaged and used to figure out the tilting movements of the original footage. And, as a new feature, these rotation tracks can also be used to detect a dynamic change in image scale. Especially this allows to compensate for a jerky, hand-made zoom. By animating the above mentioned "Expected Zoom" setting, you'll be able to re-do the zoom in a smooth and slick way.
Another benefit of the reworked calculation scheme is that the stabilizer now handles all kinds irregular track setups better. This allows to deal with situations where a feature used as tracking anchor is obscured or moves out of sight altogether and thus has to be replaced by another feature, as is typically the case with extended sidewise travelling shots.
While the feature set of the old and the new version of the 2D stabilizator are equivalent, the actual calculations are done in a different way and thus slightly changed behaviour can be expected. If you migrate an existing `*.blend` file, you might need to change the setup of the tracks in some cases to get good results with the new version. Especially, if the old setup used only one track for location and a single different track for rotation, it often helps to add both tracks in the new version, both for location and rotation.
Stamp metadata:
The "Stamp metadata" feature, part of Blender for ages, can now be tweaked a bit more. The labels ("Camera" in front of the camera name, "File" in front of the file name, etc.) can be turned off to save space. This is rather useful when rendering smaller images, such as thumbnails in a pose library.
